KING'S LYNN 47 ROBINS 43

Monday April 29, 2019
SWINDON secured another important away point from a narrow 47-43 defeat at King’s Lynn in the Premiership Supporters’ Cup on Monday.

The CFS Filtration Robins weren’t quite able to upstage British Champion Robert Lambert in a last-heat decider, but they further enhanced their position in the group and remain strong favourites to progress to the Final.

Skipper Jason Doyle gave a high-class display whilst Troy Batchelor recorded three wins on his old home track as the Robins always stayed in touch – and there was also a most encouraging return to form for reserve Zach Wajtknecht, who took a full schedule of seven rides by as early as Heat 11!

Doyle lost out to Lambert in Heat 1 but an early four-point Lynn lead was cancelled out by Tobiasz Musielak and Adam Ellis with some sharp starting in Heat 3.

Batchelor hit trouble on turn two in his first ride which helped the Stars to a 5-1 in Heat 4, but Swindon dug in with Wajtknecht taking a good third place over Ty Proctor in Heat 5 as the Robins covered for the absence of Dawid Lampart, injured during practice in Poland.

Ellis broke the tapes in Heat 8 but Wajtknecht stepped in for a fine victory, although the home side did go six-up when Lambert combined with Riss for maximum points in Heat 10.

Doyle responded with a brilliant effort to pass Thomas Jorgensen on the last lap of Heat 11 in the ride of the night, and Heats 12 and 13 both went the Robins’ way as Batchelor took a second success over Lambert with Musielak keeping Lewis Kerr at bay - and then Doyle dominated Heat 13 whilst Jorgensen came to grief when chasing Ellis.

That cut the gap to two points, and a shared Heat 14 followed as Doyle took victory but Ellis was kept at the back by Palm Toft, meaning the Robins needed a 5-1 from the decider to snatch the win.

The task on this occasion proved beyond them as Lambert produced a superb ride to squeeze round Batchelor on turn two, but the visitors could still reflect on another positive night.

Boss Alun Rossiter said: “Obviously barring a catastrophe we’re nearly there, although you never say never in speedway and we still have another match to go in the group.

“I do feel with Dawid we might have nicked it, but really a point is good enough for us, and everybody’s in one piece too.

“I think Zach finishing second at Berwick on Saturday (in the British Under-21 Final) gave him the lift he needed, and he showed what he’s capable of tonight. His race to beat Erik Riss was pretty special.”

Robins now prepare for two big home meetings next week, starting against Peterborough in their first Premiership match at the Abbey this season on Bank Holiday Monday (7.30pm).
