Everyone at Swindon Speedway was shocked and saddened by the sudden death of track staff team member Phil Rice on Monday, after a short illness.
A huge speedway fan, Phil had worked on the day time team at Blunsdon for over 10 years and was a valuable and much loved member of the team.
In addition to his duties at the track, Phil also organised a number of social activities for track staff including a memorable day at Buxton Speedway, learning how to slide a speedway bike, and numerous away day visits to other tracks up and down the country.
Phil’s love of the sport started at the Hyde Road Belle Vue track and over the years he visited more than 130 speedway tracks, including circuits in Australia, Sweden, Denmark, Poland and many other countries. A keen supporter of the BEN Fund, Phil organised regular collections at Swindon.
A gentleman of the sport, Phil will be hugely missed by all those who worked alongside him or knew him.
The club sends their sincere condolences to Jill and Phil’s family.
