PETITION: SWINDON NEEDS SPEEDWAY

Monday September 23, 2024
Swindon Speedway fans have launched a petition to gather SWINDON ROBINS support in their goal to see the sport return to the town.

Fan group "Swindon Needs Speedway" have launched the petition asking that all work at the Swindon Robins' former home to comply with regulations, and make it fit for purpose to accommodate a possible return of the sport. They have also requested the local authority to identify suitable leisure space to host Speedway within the town and include the return of the sport into their Local Plan.

Swindon haven’t competed in Speedway since 2019 due to a mix of the Covid-19 pandemic and the redevelopment of the Abbey Stadium.

A Swindon Needs Speedway representative said "Our group's sole aim is to see speedway racing return to the town of Swindon, ideally at the Robins' spiritual home of the Abbey Stadium, or at a new venture if necessary. Whilst we acknowledge Swindon Motorsports' aspiration to host the sport at Studley Grange, the content of the petition is targeted to keep all options on the table and give the best chance for fans to see the Robins fly again. The Abbey Stadium is currently the only existing venue with an opportunity to resurrect the sport and mandated planning condition work is still outstanding to make it fit for purpose. We have also asked Swindon Borough Council to investigate land need options for hosting speedway in their area of jurisdiction. This approach, along with Swindon Motorsports' plans, enables multiple threads to be active and provides breadth to the chances of the Swindon Robins getting back on track - which I'm sure is the goal of us all"

The petition already has over 1,000 signatures in just a few days and several Robins stars of the past have lent their support - including Geoff Bouchard, Tobiasz Musielak and Shawn McConnell, amongst others.
